Amber & New Year, New Waffles

2011 is already off to a fabulous start.  Yesterday, there was plenty of petting kitties, then La Palapa brunch with friends, and then cider at DBA.  And, there was the acquisition of what may prove to be the most life-changing piece of technology introduced to my household since the Swiffer Sweeper:

a waffle iron.

Making waffles is a process, and it will take several batches before I get them toasty enough and spread all the way to the edges.  But, that's reinforcement of key life lessons.  Everything is a process.  We are constantly changing.... and breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

And, just like life, investment in your foundations can reap buoyant, soul-lifting rewards: you can make lots of waffles in advance and freeze them and then enjoy them for quick toaster breakfasts during the work week.

2011, I already love you.

Amber & Geography Lessons

I bet that when you think of what lies to the north of you, if you are in the U.S. (and Google Analytics tells us many of you are not-- Hello, one person in Thailand!), you think of Canada.  And then maybe your imagination stops there, reflecting on the value of the loonie and how they still read up there.  But, maybe you are forgetting that even further north than Canada is The Arctic!  And maybe they have great brunch places there.  On what's left of the ice.

Likewise, even farther north than where I live is Inwood.

(On that map, I am way way down below the bridge.  Sooo far south.)

That's right, people who think I live in the Bronx, there is a whole neighborhood above me, complete with another 40 or so blocks of Manhattan.  And an amazing brunch place.

And, somewhat ironically, maybe you learn about this brunch place from your friends who live downtown, because maybe it takes someone from Oklahoma to plan a trip to The Arctic.  For brunch.

And maybe it's an international expedition with a friend from Sweden, a place further north than even Inwood, but so far north that it's like you crossed the north pole and came out on the other side.

And maybe you liked your reuben so much that you will definitely go back sometime soon, but maybe not today because the weather conditions are too severe for an expedition to the north.

I mean, look at those menacing flurries.  And that Feels Like.

Amber & Top Foods Challenge: Day Two

I love brunch.  I love not eating first thing I wake up, and I love making a mid-morning meal into a social event (even if "social" just means me and a book at Plum Pomidor).  And, readers of this blog know how much I love La Palapa.

My visitors are sure to be treated to a meal at La Palapa--either the eastern or western options, depending on how much said visitors enjoy walking and how tolerant of east village youth I am feeling.  (Also, there is a waiter at the east one with the most beautiful hair ever.)  All of the breakfast options are great but must be accompanied by café de olla, the orangey sweet deliciousness that makes, if you can believe it, coffee even better.

My favorite brunch option is to get the brunch special and upgrade the coffee to the café de olla on my second cup.  The brunch special also comes with a bloody mary (or bloody maria if you have a better relationship with tequila than I do) or michelada, fresh fruit (you can have my pineapple and mango), and then your choice of entrees.  I recommend the huevos rancheros con salsa verde.

Eggs, just perfectly runny, on delicious fresh tortillas with tons of queso fresco and crema, swimming in a sea of the most delicious salsa verde ever (I could just eat a bowl of the salsa verde and be happy).  If you visit NYC for two weekends, we might have to go there twice.  I wish they were serving brunch right now.

Amber & It's All In There

This weekend, a new kitty environment was added to my household.

This Super Fabulous Kitty House really sums up the weekend.  It was made by my fantastic sister.

Candice is seen here prepping for her trip to the Gulf where she helped out with the oil clean up efforts by wrapping herself in toilet paper and then rolling around on the beach.  See?  She is not only very giving of environments to the kitties, but she also helps out the other Al Gore kind of environment.

In addition to being made by the birthday girl, out of the box which contained an air conditioner present from my parents which made my apartment completely livable again, which they gave me on their visit, and which my dad and Bernard installed, the Super Fabulous Kitty House also reminds me of all the fun games the cats played in it all weekend which reminds me that I had a super fun time watching the World Cup Soccer game on Sunday with Nick and Diana after brunch at La Palapa.  And that reminds me of huevos rancheros con salsa verde.  And that pile of green stew and white creamy stuff on an egg makes me happy.

See?  The Super Fabulous Kitty House is really quite representative of my whole weekend.

Amber & Differences

This is a blog post about Boston vs New York. In Boston, there are no kitties, but there are mugs with little animal buddies at brunch.

Amber & Hallucicopters & Vulnerable Vultures

I have had a terrible, terrible TMJ-triggered headache since I sat down on the D train uptown after work on Friday evening. By the time I got to 125th Street to change to the A, I was seeing floaters and experiencing phonophobia. And then, when I got off the train in the 175th Street Station and took a breath of that fresh east side exit stairwell, the nausea began. Friday night and Saturday were pretty much a blur of trying to nap, alternating cold and hot compresses, jaw clenching remedy, lion pose and chest stretches. But then, last night at 2 am, I was awoken by the sound of helicopters right outside my window and a searchlight flooding in my window.

Now, it's completely true that, over the course of the weekend, my system was treated to a cocktail of 1 part anti-spasm Cyclobenzaprine, several parts muscle-relaxant, anti-spasticity aid Zanaflex, one part anti-inflammatory Diclofenac, and a dash of just about every over-the-counter pain pill that didn't contraindicate the blend and a spritz of peppermint oil for a wholistic flavor. And, its absolutely true that Wikipedia claims that...

Tizanidine use has been associated with hallucinations. Visual hallucinations and delusions have been reported in 5 of 170 patients (3%) in two North American controlled clinical studies.

But that's totally lacking citation. And, I confirmed the reality of the helicopter, which made rounds from 2 am until about 8, with tweets from both GoGetter122 and 5starr_Chick (you really have to scroll down; 5starr_Chick in particular is a tweety little bird). And there was this unanswered question on Yahoo! Answers, providing no explanation but assuring me that I wasn't imagining a helicopter in some drastic self-punishing hallucination. After all, what is worse for a migraine than a loud helicopter and a search light?

Really, the side effects I most worry about from the fistfulls of pills I have been popping (which are just now seeming like maybe they are starting to work a little bit, maybe? knock wood very quietly? please?) are vulture extinction, rabies, disruption to Zoroastrian Parsi cultural practices, and the ruin of Wisconsin brunch. No, really I swear I'm only a little doped right now and the persistent pain is pretty grounding. Wikipedia, my frenemy, tells me...

Use of diclofenac in animals has been reported to have led to a sharp decline in the vulture population in the Indian subcontinent, 95% decline in 2004, 99.9% decline as of 2008. The mechanism is probably renal failure, a known side-effect of diclofenac. Vultures eat the carcasses of livestock that have been administered veterinary diclofenac, and are poisoned by the accumulated chemical. At a meeting of the National Wildlife Board in March 2005, the Government of India announced that it intended to phase out the veterinary use of diclofenac.... "The loss of tens of millions of vultures over the last decade has had major ecological consequences across the Indian subcontinent that pose a potential threat to human health. In many places, populations of feral dogs... have increased sharply from the disappearance of Gyps vultures as the main scavenger of wild and domestic ungulate carcasses. Associated with the rise in dog numbers is an increased risk of rabies" and casualties of almost 50,000 people.

The loss of vultures has had a social impact on the Indian Zoroastrian Parsi community, who traditionally use vultures to dispose of human corpses in Towers of Silence, but are now compelled to seek alternate methods of disposal.

Diclofenac was shown also to cause harm to freshwater fish species such as rainbow trout.

See how horrible my headache is?

I'm sorry, Mr. Vulture. I feel really bad about putting my head pain first.

Amber & Arrivals

We're here! And eating breakfast. It was a long day of travel (thank
you, snow) and a short night of sleep, but we are here.

Amber & Jimmy Time

Yesterday, I got my bangs trimmed for free, bought a perfectly-sized pair of jeans, went to Murray's Cheese Shop and got malted milk balls, had Laundry Club with CRD, watched a Doris Day movie that made me think I was having LSD flashbacks, and had a really delicious Mexican Brumch with Jimmy.

I took this picture of Jimmy while we were doing errands. He had to hold my coffee so I could press the black button on the camera.

Then, Jimmy took this picture of the two of us. I look sort of droopey, but I think that's from the cold windy weather and incredibly bright sunshine.

Amber & Brunch

Brunch is my favorite meal. I am so glad they have it here in Boston, too, and it comes with a side of mild amusement and tolerance of my photoresearch.

Amber & Text

Kids these days like to text message. I do, too-- don't get me wrong. But I feel like there are some situations which are above and beyond the appropriateness of texting.

Appropriate Uses
1. Texting a friend to find out if they are dead.
Sample message: r u dead?
A situation that might warrant this could be if your friend was selling his computer on Craigslist to a Stranger and you hadn't heard from him since the Stranger came to his house. Texting allows you to quickly obtain targeted information. You need to know because you might have to call in this dame.

2. Texting friends to let them know you are inside the restaurant when they are running a little late for brunch.
Sample message: We are inside.
Calling might seem like you are trying to rush them, but texting conveys useful information in a passive, calm way. Because brunch should be calm.

3. Texting to say you made your train.
Sample message: I am on the train!
Again, texting conveys important information with great efficiency. And, provides a worry-reducing service to the recipient.

4. Texting conersationally when you are standing outside in the cold during the Plantbuildings Show.
Sample message: Did you hear who got fired?
In this example, the information is neither useful nor efficient. But, texting is mobile and can be done easily with fingerless gloves.

Wrong Uses
1. Texting your boss at 2 a.m. to say you might be coming down with a stomach virus and won't be in.
Sample message: I am getting stomach virus. Won't be in tomorrow.
Really? And you think I don't know you're drunk? Wrong.

There are lots more wrong uses, but that one is so, so wrong, I'll let you mull it over for a while. I hope this lesson was informative.

Amber & CRD, Best Friend Ever

Today is the anniversary of the birth of CRD. What a joyous day! CRD has so many marvelous traits that I wouldn't be able to maintain the pith and brevity which defines blogging if I described them all.

This photo, taken by Jimmy, pretty much sums up those traits.

He has good hair, likes cats (especially squishing them), is nice to have brunch with, and is very smart. You can see evidence of the smart because he is wearing a warm coat and it is cold outside.

Happy Birthday, CRD!

Amber & Quilting, Step 1

Yesterday was a big day. First, I had brunch with Kevin and Diana, then I got my hair-did with Jacqueline (just a trim since I am on the road to perm, but much darker color for fall), then Diana and I braved Hanna to journey to City Quilter. There, Diana helped me pick out the fabric for my very-first-ever quilt.

Here, Amy is examining it. She liked the combination of pinks and greens with the more subtle gray and biege and thinks it will go nicely in the room.

I am going to use this Brick Path pattern from the Amy Butler website, only I am doing the slightly less busy variation using only six fabrics instead of twelve.

Here is Woody demonstrating what he will do once the quilt is made: lay on it and groom his belly.

Amber & Fun Forks

Well, I blew it. I neglected to photo-document our Long Island Weekend Adventure, except this one photo which I took with CRD's camera. CRD also pretty much summed up the trip both with his blog post this morning and when, on the trip, he explained his amusement by describing the setting as "same friends, different backdrop."
After the above single photo was taken, showing Kevin and Diana trying to adjust the air flow in the car and CRD filled with joy, we went to visit Peter on the north fork and had fun relaxation at his beautiful abode. Then, we went to Harriet's 80th Birthday Party on the South Fork, where we met Nick, and Diana and I danced. Then, there was more Peter fun, including beach and brunch and sculptures. I have no photos from any of these events so you'll have to take my word for it. Good times!
Thanks, everyone. I feel incredibly lucky to know such wonderful, unique people.

Amber & Good Times

I officially missed a blog day for the first time yesterday. Sad. But it was because I had such a fun-filled day with friends! I came in Saturday night and had dinner with CRD, James, Alisa, Nick, Matthew and Shelley at Baluchi's whose kitchen was closing as we sat down. Then, I watched a Mary Tyler Moore with CRD, Nick and Tyler which was about Mr. Grant's birthday. Then, on Sunday morning, we went to The Smith and had brunch before running shopping errands at Kiehl's, Ricky's, Sunrise Mart, and Uniqlo.

(Alisa, Jimmy, CRD, Tyler, Nick and Diana)

Then, I had dinner with Harriet & Perry, Diana and Nick at Indochine. I had a fancy snapper that was served whole with eyeballs! Then, we went to visit Kevin in his sick bed. (Feel better, Little Kevin Buddy!)

Today, Nick, CRD and I had brunch at the Connecticut Country Grill place in CRD's hood. I had a burger.

Next, I'm going to watch programs with CRD before heading uptown for the beginning of New Year's Eve festivities. Whew! Such good times!

Amber & Pre-Flight Checklists

Tomorrow, I am traveling to New York for a year-end visit. Today, I am finishing up my budget for Finance and then going straight to my last night of Zoo Lights volunteering, and then home to plan for my trip. My remaining tasks include:

- laundry (so I have clean outfits to wear),
- cat sitter prep (a note, a check, leaving food and paper towels out, covering the couch),
- packing (including fitting my liquids into smaller containers and deciding on a versatile coat),
- figuring out how to carry my bag of bulky presents (pillows? are voluminous),
- charging my Nano,
- spending time with kitties,
- cleaning out the fridge, and,
- going to bed early.

That last task is because I am volunteering at the ape house tomorrow before heading out for the train. Tomorrow at this time, I'll be raking gorilla-pooped hay, but Sunday at this time, I'll be getting ready for brunch with my NYC friends. Scoopy!

Bye, bye, Zoo Lights and DC!
Still, I'll miss snuggles with my kitties.

Amber & Awesome Club

CRD flew into town yesterday for Awesome Club. I wore my smoking bird shirt in his honor. We went out to brunch at Tonic and had bloody marys with bacon. CRD loves bacon!

CRD drew an alligator on the tabletop. He sure loves alligators!

I drew this abstract art which represented how I felt at the time.

Then, we went to the zoo and saw lions, tigers, orang utans, gorillas and a host of small mammals and reptiles. Then, we watched programs and ate chips and salsa, rocky road ice cream and mac & cheese. CRD topped off his night with an apple cider, but I prefer not to eat so close to bedtime.

This morning, I got up and went to apprentice at the zoo, and, about two hours later, CRD left to fly back to NYC. It was Awesome and a Club. I love Awesome Club.

And now I am going to bed.

Amber & Stomach Viruses

Chris caught a "stomach virus" and was too sick today for brunch at La Palapa.

Thank goodness he has Zach to take care of him.

Get better, Chris!
