Amber & No Alarms and No Surprises

I am still feeling very positively about 2011, despite some threats to burst my optimistic bubble.  The largest threatening pin popper was a disastrous rug thing that happened to a friend involving a dog with digestive problems.  Something like that can really set a tone, you know, even if it doesn't happen to you directly?  But, it can also result in the aquisition of new appliances, which is a shiny silver lining if ever there was one.

But, I'm still a bit shaken that my friends at Apple also have attempted to break my new year stride by failing to wake me up at the desired time for three days running.  (You will recall my regular alarm clock is ILL.)  Now, the first day, I thought I had managed to sleep through my only (accidentally) purchased ring tone.  It is sort of soothing, and I have been known to sleep through even greater challenges.  And the second day, I thought my phone was broken.  But last night, I discovered this article in the New York Times which pointed the finger of blame on some kind of very belated Y2K issue.  And Nick sent this confirmation that the phone should have worked today.

Well, it didn't.

But unlike the folks who wrote in to the Times to complain about missing flights, jobs, morning talk shows, etc., I had set a back up in the form of...

Woody.

Not surprisingly, that one worked like a charm.  Very reliable, that guy.

Amber & Even Bigger Birthday Booty

Last night, in addition to a quieterly breathing Woody, I got this novelty t as a present from Nick.

See?  There's a doggie riding a bike with a kitty in the basket.  And, under my pointing hand, there is a birdie flying along with them and some trees.  (It's like this shirt and this one got together and had a green baby.)  Nick pointed out the doggie can't really reach the pedals, but we know they must be coasting because there is a little motion cloud coming out of the back tire.  Cute, and dynamic.  (Also note I am wearing the Alison hedgie today to mix it up, cutie-animal-style.)

Also, I got Thai food and this book from CRD.  It has that poem in it that makes me cry.

But really, everything makes me cry this week.

Amber & More Birthday Wishes

I totally almost forgot that this guy says Happy Birthday to Nick, too.

And so does Petey!

You can tell because he is licking the air to taste the excitement.

Amber & Six Things At 6 am

1.  What can possibly happen when you are on bed rest and leave your chewy beast alone with two rolls of paper towels?

Shreddy mayhem.  What are those blurs under the drying rack?  Why that is Ginger and Woody rolling around with crazy head in piles of shreds.

2.  Not being as active as I usualy am, I was thrilled to discover this use of my skills while prone.

I am going to excel at this.  I wonder how to interpret Mrs. Tiggy Winkle while asleep.  I bet Miss Tiggy Winkle can help me.

3.  Why am I craving a chili dog at 6 am?

(Photo of my hertiage food, a Capitol Lunch dog, by Candice)

4.  Who knew some kitties had boggled eyes?

5.  What did we do when we had insomnia before LOLcats?

Amber & Boys

Did I mention it was the birthday of these guys?  Ginger and Pickles.

Sigh.  They are so photogenic.  Look at this one!

Ginger is a little light-colored in that shot.  Must be the sun glare.

Amber & The Bloody Truth

Everywhere I go lately, I see those bus ads for True Blood, the HBO series about vampires which are based on the popular series of books but are not that other popular vampire movie/book franchise.

I've never seen the show.  But I did really, really like that other show about vampires.  (Little known fact: Awesome Club originally was Buffy Club.  Hence the Tuesday night schedule.)  So, I asked James if he thought I would like it, and he said yes.

But I was still sort of skeptical, although I couldn't tell you why.  Maybe the ads are just too lush?  Maybe it's the challenge for me of watching any HBO shows?  Maybe it's that I missed the first two seasons and would have to catch up fast?

But then Kirk, hot off his successful recommendation of Frisky Dingo and therefore an expert on what makes good TV, pointed me to this video by Snoop Dogg, a tribute to one of the characters on the show.  It is so over-the-top, I can't even bring myself to embed it.

Suffice it to say that it is more Snoop than Snoop ever was, a real simulacrum of Snoopdom.  I have no idea how to take it.  Does he know she's not a real person?  And?  "Yellow cars ain't fly, So hop in my jet."  For real?

I say no thank you to the whole endeavor.  Until I watch all the new Psychs and there is nothing else to do.

Oh, Snoop.

Amber & See? It's a GREAT idea.

Erl (aka Isaac) sends this proof that getting a Petey is the best idea I ever had.

Well, maybe just barely as good as getting a gorilla.

Amber & Four Friday Things

1.  I love this song.  I have been singing it all day.  Luckily, I have been alone in the office.

Ohhh ohh.  Ohhh ohhh ohhh ohhh, ohhh ohhh.  The beginning is the best ever.  And: "I guess we'll just have to adjust."

2.  What's this little gal doing on the label to my bath salts?

3.  What's not to love about a new coworker when one of the five things on his desk is a Ganesh statue?

I mean, what are the odds?

Two Ganeshes, one office?  ("Probable, yo. The odds is probable.")

4.  Baby capybaras.  (Hat tip, Alison.)

I want to go to there.  And, I love you, Terri Beth.

Amber & Things I Didn't Want to Like

Remember Sake?  My puggy officemate?

Well, she's starring in a new video.  I didn't want to like the video on account of how I am not all into babies and whatnot.  I am not, for example, the audience for in utero jewelry.  But, drat, this is just too amazingly cute.

Sake, you and I know you are the real star of the film.  Now, all I have to do is convince Kevin that we need to make our own version.  I nominate him to push.  I'll play the Sake role.  Our body types are more similar.

Amber & A Cautionary Tale

A concerned friend, sends this to warn against acquisition of a Petey.

Where others see danger, I see opportunity.  For compelling blog content.

Amber & Why?

Because? It's AWESOME.

Oh, Woody.  I know what I am getting you for your birthday.

Amber & Doctors

My feelings about doctors are multifaceted.  When I am sick, I tend to put too much trust in them, transforming my eager desire to feel better into devotion to every diagnostic word they say.  But, sometimes they are wrong.  And sometimes, they make bad choices and cause me twelve hours of misery.  Doctors' jobs are incredibly hard, but they are just regular people and they are far from perfect.

I often think I missed my calling to be an animal doctor.  I was exceptionally good at chemistry and biology, and I love animals.  And I am super good at keeping them calm while I perform procedures.

But, maybe I would have had difficulty emotionally separating myself from the pets.  Nobody wants a vet who cries more than you when your animal buddy has to be put to sleep.

I do look super good in white, though.

Maybe it's not too late for me to become an holistic practioner for doggies?  You know, giving them herbal baths and massage and stuff?

Amber & Doggies

Remember when I wanted to get an iDog and name it Daisy?

Welcome to Petey, my new iDog 2.0.  Petey is like Daisy, but he has less fur and will match better with Pickles.

See? Twins.  Plus, like Daisy, Petey can be carried around in a bag and not smell bad.  And, he can wear awesome outfits, like this Business Time look for when he accompanies me to work.

But, I will have to be patient and wait to get a Petey. Right now, I need to focus on Tiggy who has a vet visit tomorrow for her teary eye and sneezing, which I think means a bad tooth.

Everybody wish the girla luck, please.

Amber & Appreciating Old Guys

This article made me appreciate Woody for what he is: an old guy.

(Amazing photo by who else?  James)

He may not be able to jump into the armoir anymore or drink from my hands on the edge of the sink.  He may be a bit crankier when he gets woken from a nap.  And, he may not bother to get up and chase the fleece wand with his baby brothers.  But he still really enjoys his naps in the sun, and he likes to wrestle with socks while I am getting dressed, and he purrs super loud during belly rubs. And no one is there faster when I shake the can of treats.  He can still do the things he loves, and that's what matters.  So, rather than being sad that my little guy isn't so young anymore, I am happy that he is happy.

Amber & Anniversaries of Births

Today is the 46th anniversary of my longest-running favorite program, Doctor Who.

To celebrate last week, Jimmy brought down a copy of the latest episode which just aired on the BBC, Waters of Mars, and some delicious papri chaat for lunch.

(Photo from the fantastically inspiring MidtownLunch.com, a midtown worker's best friend)

Jimmy and the Doctor AND Indian street food made for the most enjoyable lunch hour ever in the office.

Kevin may not have been so interested in the penultimate episode starring my most crushingest crush, David Tennant, but he sure was interested in some chaat and the fresh, hot naan that came with it.

Jimmy brought to my attention that is also Harpo Marx's birthday.

This clip from the British Queer as Folk is perfect for today, merging, as it does, things Doctor Who-related and birthdays.  (Also, the show's creator was also the person responsible for the revival of the Doctor in the 21st century, which explains what K-9 is doing at a gay birthday.  Thank you, Russel T. Davies.)

Bloody brilliant, as they say.

Amber & A Very Special November 5th

Today is a super nice day for two reasons.

First, it's the perfect temperature outside for knee socks.

These are rare fall (and spring days) where there's a breeze, but it's not too chilly.  You can wear a skirt without looking unseasonable and pair it with a long coat and a scarf.  Magic!  The perfect kind of day for patent leather, double-strap Earth Shoes that are so very 2012: near-futuristic.  And knee socks.

The second nice thing is that it's Eddie's birthday.

Eddie was kind enough to come to my Junior Prom with me. He was tolerated being called "Eddie Spaghetti" by my mom, and making punch jokes with my dad.  He was voted class cutie, and, in college, entertained Faith, Jamie and I will his performances in the penthouse of our dorm.  He's a fantastic guy, and he loves pooches.  Happy birthday, Eddie!

Amber & Hallucicopters & Vulnerable Vultures

I have had a terrible, terrible TMJ-triggered headache since I sat down on the D train uptown after work on Friday evening. By the time I got to 125th Street to change to the A, I was seeing floaters and experiencing phonophobia. And then, when I got off the train in the 175th Street Station and took a breath of that fresh east side exit stairwell, the nausea began. Friday night and Saturday were pretty much a blur of trying to nap, alternating cold and hot compresses, jaw clenching remedy, lion pose and chest stretches. But then, last night at 2 am, I was awoken by the sound of helicopters right outside my window and a searchlight flooding in my window.

Now, it's completely true that, over the course of the weekend, my system was treated to a cocktail of 1 part anti-spasm Cyclobenzaprine, several parts muscle-relaxant, anti-spasticity aid Zanaflex, one part anti-inflammatory Diclofenac, and a dash of just about every over-the-counter pain pill that didn't contraindicate the blend and a spritz of peppermint oil for a wholistic flavor. And, its absolutely true that Wikipedia claims that...

Tizanidine use has been associated with hallucinations. Visual hallucinations and delusions have been reported in 5 of 170 patients (3%) in two North American controlled clinical studies.

But that's totally lacking citation. And, I confirmed the reality of the helicopter, which made rounds from 2 am until about 8, with tweets from both GoGetter122 and 5starr_Chick (you really have to scroll down; 5starr_Chick in particular is a tweety little bird). And there was this unanswered question on Yahoo! Answers, providing no explanation but assuring me that I wasn't imagining a helicopter in some drastic self-punishing hallucination. After all, what is worse for a migraine than a loud helicopter and a search light?

Really, the side effects I most worry about from the fistfulls of pills I have been popping (which are just now seeming like maybe they are starting to work a little bit, maybe? knock wood very quietly? please?) are vulture extinction, rabies, disruption to Zoroastrian Parsi cultural practices, and the ruin of Wisconsin brunch. No, really I swear I'm only a little doped right now and the persistent pain is pretty grounding. Wikipedia, my frenemy, tells me...

Use of diclofenac in animals has been reported to have led to a sharp decline in the vulture population in the Indian subcontinent, 95% decline in 2004, 99.9% decline as of 2008. The mechanism is probably renal failure, a known side-effect of diclofenac. Vultures eat the carcasses of livestock that have been administered veterinary diclofenac, and are poisoned by the accumulated chemical. At a meeting of the National Wildlife Board in March 2005, the Government of India announced that it intended to phase out the veterinary use of diclofenac.... "The loss of tens of millions of vultures over the last decade has had major ecological consequences across the Indian subcontinent that pose a potential threat to human health. In many places, populations of feral dogs... have increased sharply from the disappearance of Gyps vultures as the main scavenger of wild and domestic ungulate carcasses. Associated with the rise in dog numbers is an increased risk of rabies" and casualties of almost 50,000 people.

The loss of vultures has had a social impact on the Indian Zoroastrian Parsi community, who traditionally use vultures to dispose of human corpses in Towers of Silence, but are now compelled to seek alternate methods of disposal.

Diclofenac was shown also to cause harm to freshwater fish species such as rainbow trout.

See how horrible my headache is?

I'm sorry, Mr. Vulture. I feel really bad about putting my head pain first.

Amber & Excess

Here at Amber &, we frequently (well, that one time) explore the nature of too much of a good thing. Sometimes I even worry that I went overboard with four cats. But then we all snuggle on the bed and I am sure we did not.

But, I think Conan has found the perfect example.

Amber & Up vs. Mid

I was chatting today with my local pet store owner and found out that he actually pays more for rent uptown near my house than he does at the midtown location which is near CRD's house. This somehow has something to do with why he doesn't stock as many varieties of the Nature's Variety dry food, including the incredibly popular (at least in my house) Bunny Rabbit Blend.

Likewise, uptown there isn't as much as a demand for doggie outfits. I told him that, if I got my own Sakehausman, I would create a market for his wares.

(Don't tell Woody I am joking about getting a pug. Stress might trigger his asthma.)
