Woody has many, many super powers, but among them is his ability to match duvet covers with amazing and handsome ease.
See for example how his ears and points and nose took on a pink glow when we lived in Madison and had a pink duvet?
Could it possibly be the same cat who looks downright tan against the back drop of our new duvet and comforter, a wonderful and much used gift from my mom and dad?
Without those gorgeous blue eyes, he would be invisible.

Amber & New Year, New Waffles
2011 is already off to a fabulous start. Yesterday, there was plenty of petting kitties, then La Palapa brunch with friends, and then cider at DBA. And, there was the acquisition of what may prove to be the most life-changing piece of technology introduced to my household since the Swiffer Sweeper:
a waffle iron.
Making waffles is a process, and it will take several batches before I get them toasty enough and spread all the way to the edges. But, that's reinforcement of key life lessons. Everything is a process. We are constantly changing.... and breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
And, just like life, investment in your foundations can reap buoyant, soul-lifting rewards: you can make lots of waffles in advance and freeze them and then enjoy them for quick toaster breakfasts during the work week.
2011, I already love you.

Amber & Happy Monkeys
I am still pretty sick, but I managed to venture out today and experienced the Snowpocalypse Aftermath first hand. Mostly, it meant climbing some street corner snow banks, and trudging through slush.
To prepare for this dangerous adventure, I armed myself with three items of prime safety: my ridiculous big snow boots, my super soft hoody (no, really, have you felt how soft it is?) and a novelty-t.
This novelty t is from the Short-Haired Lady Coffee Place near Nick. Nick goes there almost every day to work, but I like to go there because they have coffee. And because I fit in good with my increasingly short hairstyle. And now that I own this shirt, I like to go there even more because they support monkey happiness.
Close up:
Not all monkeys going into space were happy. But this one sure is. He must like coffee, too. Or short-haired ladies.
Thank you for the nice shirt, Nick.

Amber & Blizzard
So, I am sick. I was so sick on Christmas Eve, my mom and dad had to drive me back because I couldn't have taken the train. While I am here, stuck in bed, under my cozy new comforter (another thanks to mom and dad) eating coconut balls (thanks to Auntie Carol) and surrounded by cats (thanks to Woody, Tiggy, Ginger and Pickles), this is what is happening outside.
Some days, you are glad to be in bed.
Danger! Decorations!

Amber & I Know What Girls Like
My office (well, Kevin and I) has a holiday tradition (well, we did it this year) of participating in the Holiday Toy Drive sponsored by the amazing Coalition for the Homeless. When I worked at Tap Dance Monthly, we did a similar thing but I sort of like the idea that my gift is anonymous this year. I like the idea of someone who knows the children matching gifts just as much as I liked picking nice things for Baby Jymmy (who is now3-1/2 years old) based on how many Y's there are in his name.
The Coalition for the Homeless has an amazing Wish List, sorted by age group and gender, to inspire your gift-giving. I picked "12 and Up Girls" because that's a super hard age, even if you have a home. And those poor girls are maybe even more aware of their situations than younger children. Plus, I got to go to Claire's Accessories.
Actually, the store was a little overstimulating. There is sure alot of bling in that store. I managed to find three nice pairs of "Hoop Earrings," one "Charm Bracelet" (with butterflies! I love butterflies!) and a set of bangle bracelets which were not on the Wish List, but I see around my neighborhood on the girls alot.
I really like this holiday tradition and program. And there is still time for you, dear reader, to participate! They even take cash gifts if you've vowed to stay out of the stores this week. It makes me super happy.

Amber & Tiny Cakes
Today, Kevin's dreams were realized. Imagine his joyous surprise when we got a box from Swiss Colony, his boyhood favorite. "I hope they are petit fours," said he. And lo! They were.
"It's my dream come true," said Kevin. The card said simply, "HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO MY PROFESSIONAL COLLEAGUES!"
Thank you, Oh Tiny Cake Giver Alison. And Godspeed, tiny cakes.

Amber & Even Bigger Birthday Booty
Last night, in addition to a quieterly breathing Woody, I got this novelty t as a present from Nick.
See? There's a doggie riding a bike with a kitty in the basket. And, under my pointing hand, there is a birdie flying along with them and some trees. (It's like this shirt and this one got together and had a green baby.) Nick pointed out the doggie can't really reach the pedals, but we know they must be coasting because there is a little motion cloud coming out of the back tire. Cute, and dynamic. (Also note I am wearing the Alison hedgie today to mix it up, cutie-animal-style.)
Also, I got Thai food and this book from CRD. It has that poem in it that makes me cry.
But really, everything makes me cry this week.

Amber & Birthday Booty Update
I got this Birthday Text from Kirk.
And, I got this gorilla ecard from Kevin and Diana.
And then this follow-up.
And then Other Kevin and James stopped by and gave me this peach donut.
And then my mom and dad sent me an ecard featuring this elephant singing a birthday song.
I just cannot believe what a bounteous birthday this has been. And it's not over yet!

Amber & Birthday Booty
So, today is also my birthday. And I got some stuff.
Yesterday, I got a very sweet card from my Auntie Carol. It was so heart-felt that it made me super happy inside. Also, I got this super heart-felt post from CRD.
Then, this morning, I got this super cutie hedgie necklace from Nick along with a rubber hedgie stamp. (Just you wait until I mail you something. Stamp!)
Then, I got this pretty headpiece (they call these "fascinators" I think) and some kitty highlighters from Alison and this loaf of yumminess and a burping cloth for after I eat the loaf (see my shoulder) from Emma.
And, I this awesome handy-crafted lavendar and flax pillow from Emma. I think it supposed to be for eyes, but it smells so good I might use it as a nose pillow.
And, then I got this adorable hedgie necklace (! the sign of the perfect gift is multiplicity!) and some chocolates which I am eating right now from Alison.
Thank you, everybodies. And, if you are wondering what a girl does with TWO hedgie necklaces? I think she celebrates that she now has an earring option, maybe wears one as an anklet or keeps one in her hedgie shrine at home, but is really, really delighted to have friends that know her so well and are so thoughtful and giving.

Amber & Birthday Boys
Happy Birthday to Nick!
Nick has so many great qualities. He is a fantastic watching programs companion, he is good with kitties (being one of the only three of Pickles's people friends) even when it means selflessly giving up his own pillow for old guys. Nick is creative, kind, and forgiving when you eat all the sorbet he brought back from Fretta's without him. He is also extremely brave when it comes to throwing out weird food in the fridge-- he even sometimes postpones doing it so that it is even more challenging. He also has great taste in eye glasses and has some of the nicest hair I have ever seen. Also, he is a great director for my interpretive dance. He is incredibly supportive of all of my talents like that. Even my newfound belly dance obsession. Also, he is good at gently warning you if you are about to eat too much salami.
Nick wears a number of professional caps. His main job is as a trainer for telephone operators.
In this photo, taken by the very talented James, Nick is showing an operator how to plug in the telephone. You will note his work uniform matches the phones. He is good at matching. That is another admirable quality. He has great socks.
Happy Birthday, Nick! I am glad you were born.

Amber & My Gift
So, today is a super big day for me for two reasons.
First, I got a chiropractic jaw adjustment, my first ever. Dr. Cooper is a miracle worker.
He started off my massaging the inside of my mouth which was not very enjoyable. And then he did that scary magic thing with the cracking sound. And now my jaw is in a different place; I am actually biting my tongue a bit and have a lisp, which the doc says will get better as I adjust to the correct position. He said it moved a whole centimeter. Crazy stuff. And, now I am wicked sleepy, likely from the release of all of the tension. Maybe tonight, I can sleep through dawn?
The second big thing today, maybe even bigger than my jaw miracle, is that maybe I will get my big dancing break tonight. I mentioned to my chiropractor that I was planning to go see Nick's sister dance tonight. (Also, I asked to leave postcards in his waiting area. Seriously, it sounds wonderful and you should go. It's about the Forest, which is very timely for me--stay tuned.) Dr. Cooper asked what I had been doing to prepare in the event they asked me to join them on stage. Why, I have been born to dance, as readers of this blog know.
But, even those with natural gifts sometimes need to use them lest we lose them. To this end, I have spent the week watching Shakira videos.
See? Anything I want, anything in the whole wide world. And what I want? Is to share my gift.
I only hope the world is ready. I fear the crowd might yell, "Give us Barabbas!" And then my dance would be silenced. Not to use too heavy of a metaphor. Or to bring to mind my favorite summer reading.
More than anything else in the world the Procurator hated the smell of attar of roses.

Also? Kevin just gave me this foam finger, my ultimate favorite sports souvenir.
Wait, that's backwards.
See? It's even more exciting on the right hand!
Thanks, Kevin!

Amber & A Request
Friend who is going to Japan next week? (You know who you are.)
Will you buy my kitties this while you are there?
Because it sure is Japanese. And they would sure love it. And so would I if it kept Pickles amused and not asking for fleece wand for five minutes.

Amber & Portrait of the Ampersand as a Young Man
A friend forwards this found portrait of me.
I love four cats (especially ones wearing birthday hats) and flowers and guitars and boat trips in Alaska and French press coffee and lamps and being at home and yarn and birds (especially owls who say "hi") and cupcakes and ice cream cones and tea pots and boots and rainbows and bees and leaves and other stuff! The resemblance is uncanny.

Amber & Treats
I tried to give Woody the gift of play this morning for his twelfth birthday.
Thank goodness it came with a gift receipt so he can exchange it for store credit.
I swear he loves the sock game. Other times.

Amber & Some Things New, A New Thing Old
I feel like I am constantly in a struggle with the Entropy of Clutter in my home. It's hard to carry out myself and the trash and the recycling--especially since the refuse area is down five flights of stairs, around the corner, and in an alley out behind the building frequented by what I like to think of as sleek-tailed squirrels. And, I seem to accumulate stuff: direct mail samples, Fresh Direct boxes, books of to-do lists, cat fur, etc. It's crucial to do a weekly Junk Round Up to make room for new, magical space-occupiers. For example, I'd much rather have this weird sushi wind up robot that Nick gave me than a stack of Con Ed billson my desk.
That's two pieces of inari on the left (my fave) and two pieces of tuna on the right. And I can't show you because I got my phone before they invented video for iPhones (drat to early adapting), but the two sushis sort of bicycle up and down and round and round when you wind it. Why? Because it's amazing.
Gifts are not always keepers, but this new Ganesh statue that Diana brought back for me from India sure is.
And that reminds me that my blurry-making phone is actually another place to collect wonderful, and muladhara chakra comforting, things. Like this Ganesh application.
(Seen here with Big Nose Felted Guy, another keeper from Nick.)

(Like the mechanical sushi, Ganesh is not as blurry in real life.)

(See how the bell is all lit up? You can pick it up and ring it. That is mostly what the app does.)
And, Jimmi referred me to this absolutely essential app where you can gong a mokugyo or the metal gong on the left and induce nagomi ("harmony").
(I won't spoil what "With Cat Mode" is.)
And, speaking of cats, this guy came to live with us a few weeks back.
(He's actually laying on a pile of books to return to other people, on the theme of getting rid of old stuff to make room for the new.)
This new buddy is actually an old artifact from the Boxing Day Heritage Booty. I molded him from greenware, painted his eyes, paw pads and nose, and then glazed the heck out of him in ceramics class. Proof?
Every great artist signs her work. In 1981, I was apparently trying something new with my R's.

Amber & Thinking Ahead
My birthday is just eight and a half months around the corner, so here's a helpful hint-- because there's nothing I am if not a helper.
There is a store on CRD's street that normally sells these patterned hens that I love. They've now added a second item to their wares which I must have.
See them, there, behind the decorative hens? They seem to be little coffee tables or stools with photographs of animals wearing suits on them.
See? That's a cow and a cat up front and what I think is an ostrich and maybe an iguana in the second row. I love it. I think maybe I even need it to be happy.
Maybe CRD can go investigate and tell us more (like a price, what they are, etc.). The shop is never open when I am leaving Awesome Club.

Amber & Gifts for the Little Guys
We here at Amber & aren't really doing much holiday shopping this year. Thankfully, my friends and I have exchanged the greatest gift of all: not exchanging gifts so that we can avoid that big ugly boot of capitalism stomping all over our mid-winter spirits. But, there are some small gifts that need to be given for those too small to understand that Santa can still love them without forking over presents. I mean, of course, cats.
Here at Amber &, we recommend Dr. Earl S. Pussum's Fancy Feline Elixir Organic Catnip. Now, not all cats love catnip, but if they are genetically disposed to love it, they will really, really love Dr. Pussum's.
I promise. Santa came a little early over the weekend to our house, mainly because Pickles was mewing for play and I was stuck in bed with a cold-ridden head that felt like it weighed a ton. The jolly fellow of the North brought four sacks of Dr. Pussum's one for each monster in my house.
Woody chose to use his as a pillow, because, well, he's an old guy who likes to nap. Notice the one eye watching me to make sure my photography doesn't disturb his rest?
Tiggy is under the bed with hers. And Ginger is up on top of the dresser with his. I guess neither of them wants their moments of pleasure documented.
Pickles, however, took a far more traditional, and yet predictably Pickles, approach to his Dr. Pussum's sack: trying to bite off one of the corners and spill the contents all over my bed.
He's demonstrating his special skill of biting and licking at the same time. And here, he is showing classic Crazy Head.
When I write my encyclopedia of cat care, that photo will be used to illustrate the Crazy Head entry.
Note the back foot action as I play tug of war. That's my boy.
Dr. Pussum's, I tell you.
